Coach Graf mentoring players circa the late 70’s
On October 4th, Metuchen High School will induct 12 new members into their Hall of Fame to bring the Hall of Fame total to 45 members. All of these inductees made an impact on MHS, but four of these inductees made a lasting impact on the athletic fields. They are Melissa Maikos ‘94, Kristen Edmonds ‘05, and coaches/faculty members Kathryn Glutz and Kenneth Graf.
Melissa Maikos was a three-sport star at Metuchen High School in the early 90’s. She was a four-year starter for the field hockey team, a 1,000-point scorer for the basketball team, and a standout pitcher for the softball team. During her time at Metuchen High School, she received numerous personal and team accolades. After high school, she continued her softball career at Boston College.
Kristen Edmonds was also a decorated three-sport star playing soccer and basketball, as well as running track. After high school, Edmonds played collegiately for the Rutgers University Women’s Soccer team before embarking on a professional soccer career. She has now played for nearly 20 years across the globe.
In 2016, she was called into a national team camp and won an NWSL (National Women's Soccer League) championship with Gotham FC in 2023. When asked about how being inducted into the MHS Hall of Fame compares to other accomplishments in her career, Kristen Edmonds said, “Being inducted into the Hall of Fame is a special achievement because unlike winning a championship or having a year of accolades, it looks at your achievements in a much broader time frame. It's more of a ’lifetime’ achievement that is historic. And that to me, is one of the greatest honors.”
Kathryn Glutz is the all-time winningest coach in Metuchen High School history in two sports; Girls’ Basketball, and Field Hockey. Last winter, she celebrated her 200th career basketball win at MHS. Her career in Metuchen Schools includes being a teacher, high school administrator, and long-time Edgar School principal. All of this followed a standout basketball playing career at Rutgers University.
Ken Graf, known to his players as “G,” taught and coached in the Metuchen Schools District for over 40 years. Graf with his trademark shirt, tie, and sports jacket on the sidelines became a coaching legend in the state winning numerous team titles and coaching awards. He is the all-time winningest coach in Metuchen High School Boys’ Soccer history. He was also instrumental in forming youth soccer leagues in town and founded the Bulldog Soccer Camp, which he still runs.
These four along with Jack Waldman ‘70, Joseph G. Ouslander '69, U.S. Army Reserve Col. Theodore “Ted” Lorenz '83, John “Bruce” Dods '66, Robert Donnan '85, Jill Darcy (Moore) '86, U.S. Navy Lt. Robert Wetzel '78, and Henry William “Bill” Blindow will be inducted October 4th and honored at the football game on the 5th at 2 pm.
