Background

The FIFA World Cup is one of the largest international events, held every four years since 1930. Teams represent their country and must qualify for the tournament by competing in regional confederation tournaments. As of 2026, eighteen countries have hosted the event, and hosting it is an honored opportunity for the host, increasing tourism and the local economy while simultaneously granting global exposure. It’s the most-watched sporting event in the world, with billions of people tuning in every year, and it is considered the world's most prestigious soccer competition. This year’s World Cup will go on from June 11th to July 19th.

Location

This is the first year that the Men’s World Cup is being held between three countries: Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Across these three counties, sixteen cities will jointly host the competition. 78 of the 104 matches will be played in the US, with eleven US cities hosting matches, including Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, and East Rutherford, where the final will be played in MetLife Stadium. Mexico will host thirteen games in Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. Canada will also host thirteen matches in Toronto and Vancouver. This location spread has its benefits, such as higher revenue expectations for the tournament and significant revenue for the host cities. The tournament will also accelerate local improvements in host cities, such as stadium improvements, increased transportation efficiency, and urban projects. However, the magnitude of the tournament could lead to higher carbon dioxide emissions, as people will have to travel long distances to attend different games.

New Format

For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a new format will be used, increasing from 32 teams to 48 teams. This was done to include more nations, presenting new opportunities for nations that were previously unable to qualify. This new format will include twelve groups of four teams. During the group stage, the top two teams in each group will move on to the new round of 32, as well as the eight best third-place teams. From there, it is similar to previous competitions, with a round of sixteen, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and then the final. This new tournament design will have 40 more games, which will add excitement to the contest, as well as generate more revenue for FIFA and host cities. For teams going all the way to the final, they will play one more game during the competition, from the previous seven games to now eight games. Combined with the fact that this will be the longest World Cup ever, many expect it to be one of the most entertaining and enjoyable tournaments in recent times.

Players and Teams to Watch

For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, there are many teams and players to keep an eye out for. The favorites for this year include France, Brazil, Argentina (defending champions), England, Spain, and Germany. However, just because these teams have the highest odds of winning, dark horses are common in the tournament, with teams like Japan, Norway, and the USA being the best underdogs. As for players, Kylian  Mbappé is expected to lead France, the overall favorite and 2018 World Cup champions. Vinícius Júnior is Brazil’s main star, and under their new renowned head coach, Carlo Ancelotti, they look like a strong force. For Spain, the 2024 European Football champions, the young Lamine Yamal is expected to be an electric player with his flashy skills and moves.

How it Will Affect Metuchen and MHS

Many students at Metuchen High School will be going to see the matches, considering that numerous them will be taking place 45 minutes away in MetLife Stadium as well as Philadelphia. As a result of the tournament, tourists from all over the world will come to the Tri-State area. Since Metuchen is on the Northeast Corridor, which connects it directly to New York via train, tourists might visit the town, increasing the local economy. Recently, the NJ Public Transportation Department announced that during the games, train ticket prices from New York Penn Station to Meadowlands Sports Complex Station near MetLife Stadium will increase from the usual $12.90 roundtrip cost to $105 dollars. This comes as many fans will use NJ Transit trains to reach the stadium, straining the system's limited capacity and potentially affecting people in Metuchen who also take NJ Transit.

Global Impact

The World Cup is an extremely important event, as it unites billions of people from around the world. People take pride in their country’s teams and their culture, showcasing it to the rest of the world.  They’ll be flooded with tourists, and many people will be exposed to different cultures, impacting the lives of people who live in the area. The games present many opportunities for new players to showcase their skills and make a name for themselves. Hundreds of thousands of jobs will also be created in order to support the event, giving many people chances for employment. The World Cup is a huge social event that has an impact beyond the sport of soccer, as it’s something that even non-loyal soccer fans can enjoy, and an opportunity for vast economic growth.
