The 2025-2026 school year has been a great year thus far, starting strong with the Pep Rally and Winter Formal, and soon coming to a close with the Battle of the Classes and prom. Operating behind the scenes of all of these events is the Student Council, Metuchen High School’s student government body that influences all the key decisions related to these events. From choosing events for Battle of the Classes to fundraising and deciding the theme of prom, Student Council has worked throughout the entire school year to make these events the best they can be!

Student Council Highlights

The Student Council's first highlight of the year was the Winter Formal: the newly rebranded annual winter dance. The dance saw students across all four grades, and was designed and planned out by none other than the Student Council. Student Council kept the momentum going with Door Decorating, a yearly tradition in which each grade level gets to decorate a wing of the school as they see fit, competing for points that will eventually count towards the Battle of the Classes. This year, the freshmen chose Star Wars, the sophomores chose Hamilton, the juniors chose Stranger Things, and the seniors selected the theme of Senior Seasons. The freshmen ultimately pulled away with an impressive underdog win, but competition was tight across the board. Most recently was Battle of the Classes, a series of competitions curated by the Student Council, in which each grade competes against the others for points. Featured events included egg and spoon race, relay race, spelling bee, the newly added inflatable race, tug of war, and finally lip sync. Lip sync, a highly anticipated, rehearsed dance competition, was won by the seniors, followed by the freshmen, sophomores, and finally juniors. After a series of close competitions, the final scores came out. In first place was the freshman class, while the juniors came in second, the seniors came in third, and the sophomores came in fourth. After a year of close competition, the Battle of the Classes was the grand finale that cemented the scores of each grade, leaving everyone with goals to strive for in next year’s Battle of the Classes.

Student Council Moving Forward

Looking ahead, the Student Council still has lots in store for this school year. First and foremost is prom, the event that the junior class has tirelessly fundraised for and mapped out. Occurring on May 21st, 2026, much of the student body is looking forward to this final school dance coming off of AP exam season. As the school year comes to a close, the Student Council is looking into two significant changes. First is the switch back to in-person elections for the Student Council. Since COVID, the Student Council has been conducting online elections, with candidates creating video speeches. Now, members running for office must deliver an in-person speech, followed by online voting over a one to two-day period. This year, speeches will be delivered on May 26th, and every candidate will give a speech, whether they run unopposed or not. Still, why have elections at the end of the previous school year? This question is answered primarily by one of the Student Council’s biggest aspirations: a Homecoming dance. Currently, the Homecoming dance is not a definite occurrence. If it were to occur, it would most likely take place instead of the Winter Formal, acting as the first dance of the year in the Winter Formal’s place. In previous years, having a Homecoming dance was hurt by the fact that by the time student council officers were elected, there simply wasn’t enough time to plan the dance. Mrs. Valovcin, the faculty advisor of the student council, expresses this sentiment: “Students have the power to create the change they want to see. By joining the Student Council, a student gets to help plan prom, provide input on Battle of the Classes, or even work towards planning a Homecoming dance or Winter Formal. The fact is, students have the ability to do all these things just by joining the Student Council. Any interested student is encouraged to join, either as a prospective officer or simply a general member. The Student Council has achieved great things this year, and hopes to accomplish even greater feats in the years to come, ideally with the help of as many students as possible!”.
