On January 5th, the Metuchen girls basketball team defeated New Brunswick 48-10. On the surface this looks like another win in a successful season but the win also marked the 200th win of Coach Kathy Glutz’s career. Achieving a career milestone is always special but considering that this comes almost 40 years after Coach Glutz’s first win, it is truly something special.
To say she has had an amazing athletic career would be an understatement. She was a three sport athlete growing up playing basketball, field hockey, and softball. She was recruited to play basketball for Rutgers University where she was a four year starter. During her Rutgers career she was a two-time captain, named team MVP, and scored over 1400 points and collected over 800 rebounds.
Coach Glutz began her coaching career in Metuchen in 1981 as a first year teacher coaching varsity field hockey, softball, and JV basketball. She became the varsity basketball coach in 1985 and coached for eight seasons before becoming a high school administrator. After 20 years working at Metuchen High School, she moved to Edgar Middle School to become the principal. She retired from that role in 2017 and returned to coaching for the 2017-18 basketball season. Coach Glutz is the all time Metuchen High School win leader as a coach in two sports: basketball and field hockey. During her time as field hockey coach, she won over 100 games along with 5 championships. In basketball she has had 12 winning seasons and has coached five 1000 point scorers.
As you can imagine with a long coaching career she has seen many changes in the women's game. One change since she started coaching is that the girls and boys ball size was the same but the girls’ ball is now smaller. Also, another notable change during her coaching career was the addition of the three point line. But with these changes, Coach Glutz still feels that the fundamentals of the game are the same.
When asked about this year's team she had this to say,“I am so proud of this year’s team. They have been successful because of great teamwork, great effort, and hard work. They are competitors who always give themselves a chance to win. We are looking forward to the upcoming GMC and State Tournaments.”
MHS is fortunate to have somebody as accomplished as Coach Glutz to be working with the team.
