The Week of Lights is a Metuchen High School tradition where portable lights are brought in to allow the teams to play night games. The Metuchen athletic stars shine at night in front of their friends and family.
According to Athletic Director John Cathcart, the tradition started back in 2014 when football played the first night game against Cardinal McCarrick. The tradition started with the idea of holding senior games at night. The week has grown to include field hockey, girls and boys soccer, as well as football. All teams were supported by Metuchen High School’s cheerleaders. The hope is with permanent lights, the school will be able to hold all senior games at night at the high school.
This year the week of lights was kicked off by the field hockey team with a 2-0 win over South Brunswick. Girls soccer followed the next night with a 6-0 thrashing of South Plainfield. Boys soccer continued the streak with a thrilling 3-0 win over South Plainfield. The week ended with a pregame pep rally honoring the senior athletes of the other fall sports. The largest crowd of the week gathered to watch the MHS football team, who dropped a hard fought game to Belvidere 19-7.
The week means a lot to the athletes that are participating as it gives them a chance to play in front of friends and family at night. According to one of the boys soccer senior captains Isaac Taegar, “It was really exciting. I always love when anyone shows up to support the team. It is always really energizing and motivating when so many of our friends and classmates show up to watch us. Something we usually only get once or twice a year so I always try to make the most of it and have a good time while still focusing on getting the job done.”
With the success and support from fans, the Week of Lights is sure to continue for years to come, giving future Bulldogs the opportunity to shine under the stars.
