After two challenging years, the Metuchen High School Boys Varsity Soccer Team ended the season with a solid 10-8-1 record, marking significant improvement and giving the team lots to look forward to. Two years ago, the team finished 8-9-2, and last year, they struggled with a tough 7-13 record and a young, inexperienced team. This year, despite their relatively young squad, they were able to find a rhythm and approach the season with something to fight for - and the results showed just that.
We asked Coach Migacz what the main factor was in this turnaround, and he pointed out two main reasons: “The majority of our roster consisted of returning varsity players. Nearly everyone had at least one year of varsity experience, and that level of familiarity and maturity is invaluable. In addition, we were fortunate to have seven freshmen earn varsity letters last year. They grew tremendously while navigating a challenging schedule, and that development paid off this season.” He also stated, “The second factor was our first truly cohesive preseason. With so many returning players, clearly defined roles, and established expectations, we were finally able to build on last year. That continuity allowed us to refine our approach in practice, and I think that showed in our performance throughout the season.” The combination of experience and stability created a spark that the Bulldogs have been missing in previous years. Players understood what was expected of them, and with the support of each other, they formed a strong sense of resilience and confidence.
While Coach Migacz focused on the structural improvements, Captain Reid Kirin, who finished the season with an impressive 15 goals and 3 assists, spoke about the mindset shift that happened within the team, “I tried to remind everyone that it’s not just about winning - it’s about teamwork and preparing ourselves for the future. As a captain, I felt a responsibility to calm the team down when doubts crept in. I don’t think it was the soccer that got us the wins; it was our mindset and attitude.” Kirin’s leadership clearly set the tone for the season. He helped players stay composed during challenging games and maintain their confidence throughout the season. This guidance, combined with the experience and preparation emphasized by Coach Migacz, helped the team earn results.
Following Kirin’s leadership insights, midfielder Habib Kassouge, a key playmaker for the team, reflected on one of the season’s most memorable moments: “Beating Highland Park was amazing. We were down by two goals, and I was able to contribute with a goal and an assist. Coming back to win that game was our first comeback victory in two years, and it showed our fight and determination.” Kassouge’s performance at Highland Park perfectly exemplified his skill and value to the squad. Despite the stats, his energy, determination, and work rate on both sides of the field inspired teammates, helping strengthen the overall foundation of the team.
With a mix of returning experience, strong teamwork, and growing chemistry both on and off the field, the future looks bright for Metuchen High School Varsity Soccer.
