Fall Sports Season Wrap-Up

Football

The Metuchen High School Football team finished the season with an impressive 7-3 record and 1-2 record in division play. This included a postseason consolation game victory over Asbury Park. The team had two three game winning streaks throughout the season and nearly missed out on a spot in the state playoffs. On offense, the team was led by the Toth brothers. Sophomore quarterback Ryan Toth accumulated 651 passing yards and 10 touchdown passes, while senior Evan Toth rushed for 8 touchdowns on 746 yards. Senior Jason Woods led the team with 9 rushing touchdowns. Junior Cameron Hayes led the team with 38 receptions and 5 receiving touchdowns.

The defense recorded 3 shutouts throughout the season. The defense was led by leading tackler junior Danny Muntemurno with an impressive 78 tackles. Senior Kyle Johnston had a team high 4½ sacks along with 58 total tackles. It was total team effort that led to a successful season.


Boys Soccer

In what will be considered a rebuilding year under second year coach Joe Migacz, the Bulldogs finished with a 7-13 record with a roster consisting of many underclassmen. The season was highlighted with a Week Of Lights victory over rival South River. Senior Theo Cole led the team in scoring with 9 goals and 4 assists.  Freshman Tyler Chen was second leading scorer with 4 goals and 3 assists. Senior Oliver Aktins was a steady presence in the net, recording nearly 100 saves and 5 clean sheets. With a large portion of the roster returning, including captain Reid Kirin, the future looks bright for the Bulldogs for 2025 and beyond. 


Girls Soccer

Girls Soccer finished with an impressive 18-6 record which included a White Division Title and a run to the state sectional finals. The Bulldogs also had a six game winning streak which included a 10-4 win over Group 4 school JP Stevens. The team scored an impressive 73 goals while only conceding 30 goals. The Bulldogs were led by dynamic seniors Kaitlyn Connors (11 goals, 27 assists) and Sarah Hyman (30 goals, 8 assists). Both were also named to the GMC All Conference team. Sophomore Rose Surgan also contributed 12 goals and 11 assists while being named to the All White Division team. Their two goalkeepers Juliana Castalonos and Samantha Powers combined for 126 saves and 9 clean sheets. The team consistently beat larger schools while competing in the GMC White Division.  Coach Knoth won White Division Coach of the Year.



Field Hockey

The Field Hockey team had another successful season by going 12-8 while playing in the competitive GMC Red Division. The season was highlighted by a five game win streak where they did not concede a single goal. The senior dominated team was led in scoring by seniors Evy Orozco with (12 goals, 9 assists), Elizabeth Lopez (8 goals, 4 assists), Kaya Gredzinski (8 goals, 1 assist) and Brooke Kowalski (5 goals, 7 assists). Senior Margaret Flint played the majority of the time in goal, recording 70 saves. Head Coach Joelle Williams won GMC Coach of the Year.


Girls Tennis

The Girls Tennis team had a rough season, going 2-12. They look to rebuild and come back stronger next year.


Boys Cross Country

The Boys Cross Country team had a tremendous season filled with both individual and team awards. The team won the Xavier Invitational early in the season with Eric Schleif taking second place. Then the team finished second in the Red Division meet. They followed that up with second place in the GMC meet. They ended the season with winning both the Central Jersey Group 1 championship and the overall Group 1 State Championship. Eric Schleif received All GMC honors and finished Top 10 in the Group 1 State Championship. Brady Allen, Kai Englert, Art Krumins, and Asher Greenbaum received Red Division honors.  Congrats to Coach Allen on being named GMC and Red Division Coach of the Year.


   Girls Cross Country

The Girls Cross Country team literally ran away from their competition on the way to a super season. The team won several championships including the Red Division, Central Jersey Group 1, and Group 1 State Championship. The team was led by Gianna Hernandez, Ella Andersen, Kaitlyn Hsueh, Sally Kelton, and Sabrina Kandel.  Gianna Hernandez’s season included a first place finish in the Red Division meet, a first place finish in the GMC championship, and third place at the Group 1 State Championship. Sophomore Ella Andersen had an impressive second season with the cross-country team finishing third in the Red Division, third in the GMC, and fourth in the Sectionals. Sally Kelton finished fourth in the Red Division, seventh in the Sectionals, and tenth in the Group 1 State Championship. Kaitlyn Hsueh finished seventh in the Red Division and eighth in the Sectionals. Along with the team awards, this season, the following received all GMC honors: Gianna Hernandez, Ella Andersen, Sally Kelton, and Kaitlyn Hsueh. Sabrina Kandel also received All Red Division. Coach Holleran was recognized as GMC and Red Division Coach of the Year.


Cheer Team

On top of supporting all of the other athletic programs throughout the fall season, MHS Cheer finished second in the White Division cheer competition. Go Dawgs!
