The Spring Musical: Footloose!

Writer: Nell MasseyNell Massey

Imagining a life without music and dance to express yourself seems nearly impossible, but not for the MHS Footlighters! Since the end of winter, the Footlighters have been bringing the town of Bowmont and its outdated laws to life while working on their production of Footloose! Footloose follows the journey of the teenage Ren McKormac (Luke Krombholz) as he moves from Chicago to Bowmont with his single mother, Ethel (Meredith Inverso). Ren is quickly introduced the rules of the town by Reverend Moore (Ryan Stein) and soon meets the Reverend’s rebellious daughter, Ariel (Manali Weller), and her friends, Rusty (Saanvi Karthik), Wendy Jo (Kaydence Agnew), and Urleen (Emily Grosso). Ren begins to stand up for the right to sing and dance alongside his new best friend, Willard (Daniel Stone), and campaigns for a Senior Prom, much to the dismay of Reverend Moore.

After talking with members of the cast and crew, it is clear that they’ve been working incredibly hard throughout tech week and are looking forward to great shows this weekend. Jessie Zhang, a freshman and a featured dancer, said, “I love the humor in Footloose, but some scenes are so important, inspirational, and can make people emotional, which I think is the best part of the show.” She’s loved her experience being a Footlighter so far, explaining, “My favorite part is the people I meet. We’re all one big family and community, I love that.” Another student, senior Avner Chaplin, has been a part of the Footlighters’ tech crew since their freshman year. Their hope is that “from the actor's performances and sound cues, the audience feels immersed and enjoys the performance.” Avner’s favorite part of working behind the scenes of Footlighters’ performances is being in charge of sound. They are able to cater to each person’s microphones and fix issues on the fly to ensure great shows. Avner remarked, “The live music and catchy lyrics combined with the new lights and sound system makes the production amazing to experience.” There will be three performances of Footloose in the MHS auditorium. The dates are March 14th at 7:00, March 15th at 7:00, and March 16th at 2:00. Tickets can be purchased this entire week during the school day for $10.00 or online at mhsfootlighters.com for $15.00. Come out to see an amazing display of talent and good ole’ southern partying!
