Spotify Wrapped is a completely personalized presentation (released December 4th in the United States in 2024) that allows Spotify users to reflect on the evolution of their music taste over the year. It includes the music listener’s top five artists and songs, along with their total minutes, artists, and songs listened to throughout 2024.
Spotify collects statistics (to present data, such as being in the top 1% of a favorite music artist,) by analyzing trends of different categories of music and songs played by the user from the account over the year, creating this mash-up. Specifically, they use technology to monitor not only what songs a person often skips during a listening session, but also what songs are liked, added, or removed from a playlist. In addition to a personalized playlist curated of a user’s top 100 songs, the music platform constantly pushes forward new music and includes this in their Wrapped. With the utilization of newly innovated AI features, the audience of up-and-coming artists is aimed to expand, and this year, it is expected to introduce many listeners to new artists.
However, some people claim that their Spotify Wrapped was not up to their expectations, with this year’s release of the recap. While some listeners are complaining about the loss of the creative elements from previous years (with some arguing the incorporation of AI into the app as a whole has spoiled the nostalgic feeling of past Spotify Wraps), some users are reporting that Spotify’s claims are just completely wrong; songs that users have never heard and artists appearing in the top five but not 100 have been spoken about online.
People have instead begun to use the Stats for Spotify website, which is based on only the user's data instead of the music recommendation system; it has proved more accurate and people have based their Wrapped on this program in contrast. In all, there have been mixed reviews regarding Spotify Wrapped this year, including the use of AI in the platform, its lack of expressiveness, and the misinformation it displays.
