Sofia D’Agnes shines both onstage and off. For most people, it would be overwhelming to take on the weight of being a competitive dancer, a dependable volunteer, and senior class president. Sofia, however, makes it look easy. Her ability to wear so many hats amazes both her friends and teachers, as her close friend Mallory Giegerich remarks, “Sofia is a hardworking person who stays loyal to her friends and has everyone’s best interest at heart!” She is a perfect example of a kindhearted person with the generosity to share her support and talents with those around her.

“Sofia is a superstar in Student Council. She single handedly designed and executed a winning door decorating theme for the Junior class last year. Though considered a quiet person, she is a leader and respected by both her peers and teachers.  Sofia is also unbelievably creative. The snowball decor was all Sofia! She is the queen of balloon arches. In addition, Sofia is a student liaison to It takes a Borough as part of the Peers for Volunteers organization and donates her time to help others. She is a huge asset to the MHS community!” - Ms. Valovcin

Ever since Sofia was a toddler of only two years old, she’s had a gift for dancing. In third grade she began dancing at the competitive level with the JJDA, and was taught many styles such as contemporary, hip hop, tap, and jazz. Since she’s been a natural performer from such a young age, she rarely gets nervous before performances. To Sofia, dancing in front of an audience is second nature, and easier than giving a presentation. With long-term activities like dance, it can be difficult to remain motivated. To keep her focus on her passion, Sofia sets goals for harder skills that she can learn each year. She also prepares to succeed at her studio’s auditions in August to ensure she is picked for the best dances. Her dream is to dance for Villanova at sports games and competitions. With long rehearsals, she’s learned to complete all of her studying and schoolwork ahead of time so that she can spend her nights dancing carefree.

“Sofia is extremely smart and talented, but above all, she is a great friend. Sofia is someone that I always know I can count on and go to for advice. She is genuine and thoughtful and anyone would be lucky to have her in their life. I truly admire her hard work and dedication that she puts into everything she does. I am so grateful to have her as one of my role models and I can’t wait to see what amazing things she will do in the future!” - Vanessa Paragano

Sofia is a key leader of countless events at Metuchen High School, and without her, student run events like Battle of the Classes, Door Decorating, and the Lip Sync Battle might not be as amazing as they are today. Sofia has been a member of the student council since her freshman year, and has been working behind the scenes to make sure all of these events run smoothly for four years. Though she had never previously held a position, this year, she stepped up to become president of the senior class. So far she’s learned how to present herself to a group of people and keep them engaged and organized. She believes the student council is an important organization because it raises the voices of students of all grades, whether freshman or senior. This year, she’s looking forward to putting together the Lip-Sync battle. Every year she’s picked out the music for her classes routine and choreographed the dancers with her close friends. Being in a leadership position is stressful for many, but Sofia manages her position with grace and excitement!

“It has been a great pleasure teaching Sofia D’Agnes in French 5 Honors and getting to know her over the past three years. Sofia is an exceptionally hardworking, focused, and intelligent young lady.  Beyond the classroom, she is deeply passionate about dance and cheer, balancing her academic commitments with impressive dedication. Sofia set a clear goal for herself—to gain admission to the college of her dreams—and through perseverance and determination, she achieved it. I am incredibly proud of her accomplishments and excited to see all that she will continue to achieve! Good luck next year, Sofia!” - Madame Girin

Along with following her own passions, Sofia wants to help other people succeed and live fulfilling lives. To give back to the Metuchen community, Sofia became the first student advisor to It Takes A Borough, an organization in town dedicated to support those in need. She took on this role at the start of her junior year by running all of their social media accounts. Now, she attends their monthly meetings to learn about their events and outreach, and then reports to the MHS club, Peers to Volunteers. By doing this, Sofia connects students with new volunteering opportunities. She often works at the Cookie Walk, Fuce 5k, and booths at downtown events to support It Takes A Borough and their mission. Sofia has loved seeing her work positively impacting the community. Listening in on the monthly meetings and hearing about each family and person being supported motivates her to do more. Even after she goes to college, she plans to continue volunteering and to support the Metuchen community when she visits home.

“Sofia is such a kindhearted and caring person. She is a great listener and is always there to help me when I need it. She is so welcoming and makes anyone feel comfortable around her. Sofia pours her heart into everything she does, always strives for her best, and never backs down. Everyday she continues to inspire me to put my best foot forward in all that I do! She is also an outstanding baker!! Sofia is all around just an amazing person to have as a friend and I can’t wait to watch her succeed in her future!” - Lauren Bonilla

Sofia’s skills at dance led her to another role as a dance captain for Breaking the Chain. She’s been dancing the Breaking the Chain’s events since she was 8, when she became aware of their mission to send aid to protect children in impoverished parts of Ghana. This led her to join the program her sophomore year. Each year, she works at two dance events, one in the winter and one in the spring. These events consist of many dance companies putting on showcases to raise money and awareness for the cause. Sofia loves working backstage with her friends and speaking to the audience about how they can show their support. This role of dance captain is a perfect example of Sofia’s selfless ability to use her passions to benefit others.

“Three years ago I was at an MHS bake sale; I purchased a brownie. As I got a few steps away from the table, I took a bite of that brownie, then proceeded to turn right around (I did a 180 degree, or π radians, turn). I had to know who made that brownie; it was one of the best I ever had (and I've eaten many). That was my introduction to a young Sofia D'Agnes, she being the master baker behind that epic brownie. Now that I've been lucky enough to teach Sofia for two years in a row, I've come to understand that her incredible baking skills are only a tiny facet of her talents. Sofia is incredibly bright and hardworking, but also one of the kindest and most humble students I know. Regardless of how tired or busy she might be with academic or extracurricular commitments, she is always so friendly and ready to bring her best to class; simply wonderful. Another terrific kid from this senior class that I will miss next year!” - Mr. Murray

Through all four years of high school, Sofia has been a proud member of the cheer team. She thrives off of the electric energy at the Senior Night game and loves performing with her friends under the lights. She’s especially proud to be representing the GMC cheer champions. Despite coming in second for the past four years, she and her teammates put in the work to bring them to victory. Sofia’s determination and leadership have helped shape the team this past year. She’s learned to hold people accountable for their own stunts and make sure each member of the team is giving their all. Sofia would love to continue cheering, or dancing, for Villanova in the future. Hopefully next year she’ll be bringing the same team spirit and dedication to the dance team at Villanova!

Next fall, Sofia will be attending Villanova as a business major, and this April, she’ll audition for the dance team. She encourages underclassmen to pursue anything that sparks their interest and to cherish their time in high school, because it goes by fast. She emphasizes the importance of staying on top of classwork and practicing time management. It’s clear from the praises of her peers that Sofia has had a remarkable impact on Metuchen High School. Her level-headed and organized approach to leading is not easily accomplished by many. She’s left big shoes to fill in both the JJDA and the Metuchen Cheer Team. Though she’ll be missed here, Villanova is lucky to have gained one of Metuchen’s best. Sofia has shown all her peers that if you are led purely by passion, determination, and an eagerness to give back to others, the future is sure to be bright!
