“Keith is a hardworking student. He puts time and effort into making sure the work he produces is exceptional. He helps others when they are in need of assistance. He is smart and talented and is a great friend.” - Ethan Hom
Keith McPherson is incredibly hardworking, relentlessly pursuing his passions and achieving his goals. Dedicated to serving his community, Keith has been part of the Boy Scouts since 2011. When Keith initially joined, he was clueless to how this program would change his life, only joining to follow his friend. As Keith spent more and more time with the Scouts, gradually advancing ranks, he began to love it and Scouts became a greater part of his life with his Scout Leaders becoming his biggest role models. When asked what he specifically likes about Boy Scouts, Keith expressed how in addition to the exciting camping trips, Boy Scouts “gives you opportunities to give back to your community with community service projects,” and allows you to have fun and make friends. This past September, Keith reached the incredible milestone of becoming an Eagle Scout, a longtime goal of his. This rank, the highest of them all, is extremely difficult and time-consuming to achieve. He did lose motivation for a short period, but pushed through and continued pursuing his dream of becoming an Eagle. After achieving the necessary merit badges (awards for certain challenges) and meeting the list of requirements, Keith began his Eagle project. The Eagle project is a community project that involves helping a certain local organization, leading Keith to build four wooden benches for the Metuchen Public Library.
Keith McPherson’s entire life has been dedicated to giving back to the community through Boy Scouts, as the program is committed to service and putting others before yourself. Carrying on with this tradition, Keith is devoting himself to joining the military and serving the country by enlisting in ROTC through college. This entails that after four years of education, the last two covered by the military, Keith will go straight into the Air Force. He dreams of becoming a pilot and had earned his student pilot license several months ago. Keith’s always been obsessed with physics, aerodynamic planes, jets, and the general field of flight and aviation. With this dream and passion, Keith aims to pursue an air and nautical engineering degree, envisioning a career as an Air Force pilot, and later a commercial pilot.
“You’ll always be the sting to my captain crunch” - Nicole Dudek
In addition to his Boy Scouts and aviation endeavors, Keith is passionate about martial arts, specifically karate, and earned his black belt in April of 2022. He began classes at Satori in 2014, following the path of his friend, and came to love the sport. After the achievement of his black belt, Keith was promoted to assistant instructor and began teaching classes of his own. When at home, Keith improves his musical skills, where he is able to play the piano, saxophone, and guitar. He started playing the piano from a young age, following in his mother’s footsteps. As his love for music grew, he picked up the saxophone and became part of the middle school band. High school band failed to fit into his daily schedule, but Keith continued to pursue music, even learning to play the guitar.
“Keith is a great kid; very friendly, hardworking, and a terrific student! Even though he is super busy with the robotics team, Boy Scouts, getting his pilot's license, and earning black belts in karate, he still manages to keep up with all his work and bring a positive attitude to class. A pleasure to have, and I'm not just saying that for fear of him beating me up. "Chief Keef" is the man, and I wish him nothing but the best for the future!” - Mr. Murray
When looking back at his MHS memories, Keith reminisces on his high school dances, Snowball and Junior Prom, and remembers his most impactful teachers, Mr. Keagle, Ms. Baird, and Mr. Murray. When asked to elaborate, Keith laughed and said “Mr. Murray doesn’t need an explanation!” discussing how he’s truly a good teacher and very personable. He notes how Mr. Keagle was also a great teacher, focusing on a subject Keith loves, teaching it well, and growing Keith’s love for physics. For AP Lang, Keith studied under Ms. Baird, who is an amazing teacher and made Keith a much better writer for which he is very appreciative.
“Keith is a great student and an awesome person. He is confident, respectful, always accepting a challenge and curious to learn something new!” - Mr Keagle
After being asked for advice for underclassmen, Keith quickly and emphatically responds, “Don’t slack off in freshman and sophomore years.” He explains how those grades still appear on your transcript, which needs to be submitted for college applications. Keith strongly recommends working hard especially through 11th grade, emphasizing the importance of trying your absolute best and working to reach your goals. Keith McPherson’s remarkable story is one of selflessness and service. We all marvel at his dedication and support for others, and his ability to pursue his passions and make a difference. Good luck in your future endeavors, MHS will be watching as you change the world!
