Senior Keira Walker contributes to school spirit through her musical talents, as well as her other school activities. Keira performs in the Metuchen High School Marching Band and wrestles on the girls’ varsity team.
As a clarinet section leader, she is a key component of the MHS Marching Band. Keira enjoys this role because it allows her to focus on being a good influence for band members in the grades below. She has always enjoyed music because it’s a great way to start the day, adding that “music has been an important part of my life.” When asked about what she would miss most about participating in the high school marching band, she mentioned the competitions and the football games.
Keira’s athletic pursuits are focused on the girls’ wrestling team. She started her wrestling career as the boys’ wrestling manager in her freshman year. The senior is very excited that girls’ wrestling is finally accepted. Keira stressed that the team represents an “amazing opportunity to build something.” She enjoys wrestling because it is both a team and an individual sport. The team works together in order to achieve its goal, but when she is on the wrestling mat, the sport becomes individual. For Keira, wrestling is a “great way to channel emotions.”
This year, the team did well in the country, regional, and state competitions. In counties, the team earned multiple first and second-place awards. Her teammate Alex went to both regions and states.
Keira’s inspiration is her older brother. He has always been supportive of everything that she does. Keira explains that she has always looked up to her brother for those reasons. Her favorite subjects in school are band and food science classes. In both courses, she has an opportunity to do something she is passionate about. In either cooking or music, she has always found a place to shine. Keira enjoys baking; she loves creating new flavors and recipes.
Finally, she shares that she will miss her friends when she graduates. Throughout her high school experience, Keira has made many new friends. Her favorite memory from MHS is freshman year biology class with her friend Kate, as this was where their great friendship began.
Keira’s advice to the underclassmen is: “Don’t be afraid to do what you want.” For example, she explains that the underclassmen shouldn’t be afraid to take the classes that they would like to take. The senior wants the freshmen to do what they would enjoy without letting anyone stop them. Keira plans to attend Penn State to major in food sciences. We wish her the best of luck in all of her future endeavors!
