“Isaac has always been a great player and an amazing friend that has been there for me through everything. I remember playing soccer with him for the first time in Kindergarten and he was even skilled back then. I remember thinking, “How is he so good? How does he do it?” and I see myself still saying it over and over again. Isaac is one of the best players in the GMC and deserves everything that comes to him.” - James Cotton
Isaac Taegar is a standout senior at Metuchen High School, with outstanding academic and athletic achievements. Throughout his interview, Isaac discussed his experience moving between New Jersey and Connecticut, specifically the unique period where he attended six different schools in only seven years. This lack of continuity created an obstacle that Isaac fought to overcome. His friendships, the close relationships he maintained throughout cross-state travels and those he formed through soccer, helped him to battle through this time. Specifically, Isaac emphasizes how the support from his close friend James Cotton helped to combat the struggle of his moves and strengthened their lifelong relationship.
“Isaac is one of the smartest, funniest, and fastest soccer players I know. He gets down, he don’t play!” - Cindy Li
Currently, Taegar holds the impressive role of captain on the MHS boys’ soccer team. This position prioritizes effective communication, as Taegar notes how captains need to be extremely vocal in order to manage the different lines and ensure everybody is in position. He also emphasizes the sport’s collective property, as teammates must rely on each other and help each other in order to succeed. Looking forward, Isaac aims to continue his soccer career at the collegiate level.
When discussing the allure of soccer, Isaac brings attention to the unique global aspect of the sport. Whether in academics, piano, or soccer, he always excelled and is among the most gifted players and musicians I know. His kindness towards our peers in school and on the soccer field are only a small testament to who he is as a person.” - Ryan Timko
Alongside running and playing piano, an additional interest of Isaac’s is a newfound passion for poetry. Taegar was inspired to enroll in a poetry class by his uncle, who also writes poetry and has published a book. Isaac has always shown an appreciation for poetry, but never personally attempted writing and found the class an opportunity to learn. In his interview, Isaac described how poetry acts as an emotional release and is an opportunity to connect with others; through his writing, he can discuss life experiences and significant news. In fact, Isaac believes that the ability to connect with others is the essence of poetry, claiming the level of execution defines one’s success in the field.
When gazing forward at the future, Taegar envisions a career exploring physics, specifically that of astrophysics, following the path of his role model, Stephen Hawking. Hawking was an extremely successful and intelligent physicist with many important contributions to his field. Taegar notes how Hawking suffers from ALS, a neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and causing muscle paralysis. However, Hawking was able to overcome this obstacle and continue pursuing physics at the highest level.
“Isaac has been such a great friend all throughout high school. He is super dependable and always there when you need him (even if you are being chased by a bear). In addition, Isaac tries his hardest to improve at soccer while making his teams more connected. Not to mention his incredible grades that he works for. Isaac is a super well rounded and fun person to be around.” - Marisol Torres
Throughout MHS, Isaac has found wonderful support and comfort in the tight-knit community our school provides. He notes how his favorite aspect of MHS is the people: the amazing teachers and the friends he’s made. When asked about his favorite or most impactful teacher, Isaac immediately responded with “Mr. Murray," whom he passionately believes to be one of the best teachers at MHS. Mr. Murray's dedication to his students allowed all to smoothly understand various math lessons; he made complex concepts, such as derivatives, easy to comprehend, and he created a welcoming and positive environment for his students. In addition, Taegar mentioned Mr. Levy, expressing his appreciation for the teacher and his class. He loved the in-class discussions and the many interesting books they read.
In his interview, Isaac advised MHS underclassmen to explore their passions and try new things; don’t feel obligated to commit, instead discover possibilities and explore your potential.
