The 67th Grammy Awards will honor music released from September 16, 2023, to August 30, 2024. The Academy's voting will determine the winners, and they will be announced on February 2nd. The most anticipated general field categories are Record Of The Year, Album Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Best New Artist.
The songs nominated for the first category, Record Of The Year, are “Now and Then” by the Beatles, “Texas Hold ‘Em” by Beyoncé, “Espresso” by Sabrina Carpenter, “360” by Charli xcx, “Birds of a Feather” by Billie Eilish, “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, “Good Luck, Babe!” by Chappell Roan, and “Fortnight” by Taylor Swift, featuring Post Malone. All are amazing songs with incredible artistic performances, but overall, I believe the winning song will be Sabrina Carpenter’s Espresso. Carpenter has been in the acting and music industry since 2011, debuting at 11 years old. As a previous Disney Channel star, her music career began early on. She started to gain attention after signing with Island Records in 2021 and releasing her hit song, “Feather.” Since then, her music’s popularity has grown exponentially, with her song “Espresso” hitting 1.8 billion streams on Spotify. Her song’s acclaim has further increased with the trending aesthetic of her tour, Short n’ Sweet. “Espresso”’s tune, upbeat, catchy, and carefree, reflects the nature of early 2010’s pop music. This hit song deserves to be acknowledged as the Record Of The Year.
For the Album Of The Year, New Blue Sun by André 3000, Cowboy Carter by Beyoncé, Short n’ Sweet by Sabrina Carpenter, Brat by Charli xcx, Djesse Vol. 4 by Jacob Collier, Hit Me Hard and Soft by Billie Eilish, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess by Chappell Roan, and The Tortured Poets Department by Taylor Swift have been nominated. Overall, Chappell Roan’s breakout album has brought queer representation to mainstream pop music and has had the most effect on pop culture than any other nominee. I believe that The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess will win this Grammy award. With Chappell’s unique, expressive appearance based on drag culture, and her songs’ open discussion of LGBTQ topics, her music surrounds her self-acceptance and sexuality as she departs her Midwest origin and begins to navigate the Los Angeles music scene. Through her album, she promotes the empowerment of the queer community and has encouraged queer youth to love themselves for who they are, rather than feeling shame in their identity. Chappell Roan deserves this award for both her artistic and vocal ability and her impact on the LGBTQ community.
For the Song Of The Year award, focusing on songwriting, the nominees are “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” “Birds of a Feather,” “Die With A Smile,” “Fortnight,” “Good Luck, Babe!,” “Not Like Us,” “Please Please Please,” and “Texas Hold ‘Em.” I believe that the most deserving nomination is Billie Eilish and Finneas’ “Birds of a Feather.” Though the song’s message is relatively simple, that you care for someone enough to transcend a lifetime, Eilish has stated that it was left purposefully vague to allow listeners to apply it to their own relationships, platonic or romantic. The idiom “birds of a feather flock together” symbolizes two people with similar interests and actions. The two songwriters and Eilish’s performance can be interpreted to represent the song, the song’s meaning, and their close relationship as siblings. The song is not only well-written, with memorable lyrics and a pleasing melody, but it also has a relatable meaning and appeal to love that extends across many different people with unique experiences. The quality of songwriting on “Birds of a Feather” makes it deserving of the Academy Award.
For the category of Best New Artist, the nominees are Benson Boone, Sabrina Carpenter, Doechii, Khruangbin, RAYE, Chappell Roan, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims. I believe that Doechii is the artist most deserving of this award. With her new rise on the scene and critically acclaimed album Alligator Bites Never Heal, Doechii is truly becoming a star. Doechii first gained pop attention with the release of “What It Is.” Her popularity increased with a feature on Tyler the Creator’s album, Chromakopia, with the track “Balloon.” Doechii displays talent, authenticity, and originality through her music. One of her most popular songs, “Denial is a River,” speaks of her recovery from addiction and journey through therapy. She speaks about growing from past experiences and moving forward through life in her own way. Through this Grammy award, Doechii’s music will be broadcast to a greater audience, and she will receive the attention and recognition she deserves.
