The movie industry suffered quite extreme setbacks in 2023: the writers and actors strikes pushed multitudes of movies back leading to huge changes in the second half of 2023 and the entirety of 2024. With that being said, this year is sure to be interesting movie wise and despite the strikes there are plenty of movies to be excited for in this upcoming year.
While comic book movies might not have as big of an impact as they had in the past, there are still some interesting ones to look out for in 2024. Deadpool 3 and Joker: Folie a Deux are both set to release this year. Deadpool 3 is following up two financial smashes at the box office and is looking to continue that trend. It is also the only Marvel Cinematic Movie (MCU) movie releasing this year and is rumored to be merging the former Fox X-men cinematic universe with the current MCU. Joker: Folie a Deux is following up an original movie as well, the first one crowned the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time which crossed the one billion dollar mark at the box office. This sequel is reported to have musical elements and Lady Gaga will star as Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. Both of these movies are looking to make huge marks and to see if R-rated comic book movies can win back fans' waning interest in the superhero genre. It is safe to say both movies need to secure much needed wins for Marvel and DC.
Other notable comic book movies include three from the Sony-verse; Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3. Sony is reportedly looking to create their own spider verse by establishing the villains first. Sony’s first attempt at this was Morbius, however it was a critical and financial flop, so this will be a very important year for Sony if they want to continue to build out their spiderverse.
This year is looking like a strong horror year as well. Smile 2 is hoping to up the financial success of the original and continue to build out that universe, seemingly with a new protagonist. The next entry in the constantly growing Saw universe is also set to release later this year, with its eleventh installment. Terrifier 3 comes out this year and is apparently going to have a holiday theme. The long awaited Beetlejuice sequel also comes out this year, with some of the original cast returning and some newer additions. It is looking like it will be a strong sequel and they certainly had enough time to plan it. A Quiet Place Day One also releases this year, bringing an entirely new ensemble of characters likely being set in the early days of this universe.
There are a few animated projects releasing this year that are sure to catch the eyes of viewers around the world. Inside Out 2 is sure to be a summertime hit, as many people adore the original and the movie has the most viewed trailer for a Disney animated film. Kung Fu Panda 4, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Despicable Me 4 are all prominent animated movie sequels that are set to release this year. All three have already created some sort of buzz surrounding them as they are three long anticipated sequels to previously successful films.
Aside from the previously discussed categories, there are a lot of other exciting movies coming out that don’t fall under those three sections. Dune: Part 2 is releasing early this year which is highly anticipated as it was delayed from last year due to the strikes. It will continue to extend the franchise in the movie industry, following the novel franchise. Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is also arriving in 2024 which will see a setting change in New York City and bring back both old and new generations of characters. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is following a large gap between the original highly praised trilogy of movies and is going to feature a significant time jump. Adding to the trend of films coming out after long periods of time, both Gladiator 2 and Karate Kid will be adding new entries into their franchises. In the Karate Kid universe there has been a show which will fill in some gaps but Gladiator 2 is following up an untouched universe over two decades later. It is safe to say that this year is going to be an eventful and interesting year for movies. These were some of the most widely highly anticipated movies of the year, but there are sure to be many more welcome surprises.
